New dormitory for Monfort boys

SHAH ALAM: More underprivileged youths will have a brighter future now with a new RM2.4 million dormitory block at the Montfort Boys Town (MBT).

At the official opening of the new building, MBT's chariman of the Board of Governors Tan Sri Clifford F. Herbert said last year ECM Libra Foundation pledged RM1.1 million and Hong Leong Foundation offered RM900,000 when there was an appeal for funds to rebuild the dormitory. The other benefactors made up the difference.

"It is such generosity that has kept Montfort going and continues to inspire our mission," he said.

Dr Poh Soon Sim, director of Hong Leong Foundation, Lim Beng Choon, adviser of ECM Libra Foundation, and Herbert together performed the official opening ceremony.

"We will increase the number of students in the June intake as this new dormitory has the capacity to house 120 boys. At present, MBT has 250 boys and 60 girls in its care," he said.

Currently, only two out of the six dormitories are occupied.
"Our operation cost is approximately RM4.8 million a year and MBT is dependent on public funds but we are able to meet the demands because of generous and supportive benefactors," Herbert said.

MBT provides skills and character formation programmes.

Students can choose from courses such as printing, welding, motor mechanics, machining, graphic design and multimedia, computer maintenance, baking, pastry making and electrical work.
