KUCHING: Top SPM scorer Awang Adrian Awang Kasumar’s hopes of getting a government scholarship seem brighter now after the federal Cabinet resolved the status of bumiputras of mixed parentage.
Awang Adrian, who was among several Sarawakians denied a place in a government matriculation programme because of his mixed parentage, is currently pursuing A-levels at Kolej Ya-yasan UEM in Perak.
His father Awang Kasumar said Awang Adrian had done well in his first year’s studies and was hoping for a scholarship to do a degree.
He obtained 10As in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.
“My son plans to study economics, maybe in Australia,” he said yesterday.
Awang Kasumar was grateful to ECM Libra Financial Group Bhd, which had offered to sponsor 50% of his son’s tuition fee to pursue A-levels at the Taylor University College, after Awang Adrian’s plight was highlighted in The Star two months ago.
However, the offer was not accepted as Awang Adrian was already one year into his A- Levels at Kolej Yayasan UEM.
Awang Kasumar was also happy that the Government had recognised Sarawak bumiputras of mixed parentage as bumiputras.
He said the Federal Constitu-tion should be streamlined with the Sarawak Constitution which automatically recognises a child as bumiputra if his or her father is one. |
